Ecosystem Miniature Log: Time Scale in Shanghai Wetland

Materialize the time of Shanghai as a bioregion through the log of wetland entities.

A project from 顾天润 Ryan Gu and 倪潇枫 Xiaofeng Ni for Media Design Studio “Flumen”

The concept of Ecological Miniature Log comes from a field experience of wetlands. In the wetlands, different organisms are experiencing different moments: some are facing new life, while others are facing death. Life and death, reproduction and aging are different life courses being played out at the same time and in the same place. While we can only experience the wetland at a certain moment in time during our visit to the wetland, we cannot have a complete temporal perception of this ecological area.

How can we present the flow of time in the ecoregion? How do the organisms in the ecoregion undergo changes during different time periods?

If we consider Shanghai as an bioregion in the definition of ecology rather than a “city” in human politics, then our so-called “city” is just a habitat where humans and some human-friendly creatures live. The “city” is a habitat in which humans and some human-friendly creatures live. Different organisms in nature form different habitats, and we chose to focus on wetlands, which have the widest biodiversity, as the design object. Based on the regional distribution of the most common lakes and wetlands in Shanghai, we chose an object in the deep water, shallow water, nearshore and shore areas as the carrier of the design content.

We choose four representative intentions (water, algae, dandelion and fir tree) in four different areas, and express their changes on three different time scales through photographic materials or computer simulations.

We materialize time through the log, and the section of the log represents the object at a certain time. As the slider slides to the position of different sections, it means that time goes or changes, and the creature in the biological area presented on the sections also change accordingly. The cross-sectional images are projected onto a large screen at the rear. When the positions of the four log sliders are different, it means that four creatures in different time periods coexist in one space.
