With the theme of “Reflections on Design of the World Tomorrow” and the concept of “Break Boundaries and Develop New Life”, the forum focuses on the teaching and creation of speculative design in the field of future design research, with the aim of promoting continuous research in this field by bringing together the perspectives of scholars from home and abroad, and contributing to the better development of innovative design education in China.
Associate Professor Francesca Valsecchi, head of our lab, and Associate Professor DU Qin have been invited for a keynote titled “Design Teaching Practices from a Speculative Design Perspective” and to the following roundtable.
Francesca and Qin discussed with other participants in depth the multi-meaning of the word “future” and a so-called post-industrial myth brought up by Anthony Dunne’s early book “Black Design”, which emphasized an outlaw-like approach to contextual fiction in order to create work and articulate issues, and also by popular entertainment products like the Netflix series Black Mirror, the film Blade Runner, and even novels as far back as Animal House, which is also filled with similar content.
In particular, Francesca shared a reflection about speculative design applied to ecology.
